Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque is located in the main historical district of the city, an area called Sultanamet. This multi domed mosque is the prime exponent of Istanbul’s Islamic past. Built during the reign of the Ottoman Empire, the Blue mosque welcomes hundreds of worshippers every day into its elaborately decorated interiors. The mosque is called the ‘Blue mosque’ because it is decorated with hundreds of blue and white tiles which are arranged in intricate and exquisite floral patterns.

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia, the ochre colored domed monument served as a church during the Christian Byzantine empire and then as a mosque during the Islamic Ottoman empire and is perhaps the best symbol of this exciting city which was the centre of three great empires. The interiors are adorned with elaborate Islamic calligraphic roundels as well as Christian mosaics which represent the religious contrast of this monument most effectively.

Topikapi Palace Museum

Topikapi Palace Museum is located on one of the hills that surround Istanbul. It once served as a residential palace of one of the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The huge palace with its interconnecting courtyards, fountains, terraces, exquisitely designed rooms and elaborate gateways gives you an insight into the magnificently opulent lives of the fabulously wealthy Sultans of the Ottoman Empire.

Festivals

Festivals are an important component of tourism in Gassim and seven cities and towns organise festivals, mostly in the summer but also some in the winter and during Eid Al Fitr. Unayzah organised the first festival four years ago and currently has the longest summer festival at 45 days.

Explore Fez

Explore more about the Region of Fez-Meknes and its nearest historical spots, the must-see places in and around the Region and latest tourism and travel news by visiting https://destination-fesmeknes.com/en/

Around the city

The central place to enter Fez’s walled city is at the gate of Bab bu Jeloud. Be sure to check out the Islamic school of Medersa Bou Inania, Dar Batha Museum and Kairaouine Mosque. Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the city’s mosques, but even if you can’t go inside Kairaouine you can still see this exquisite 9th century building’s tile work by peering into its courtyards

Fez’s leather tanneries

Visiting one of Fez’s leather tanneries is a memorable experience. During a tannery visit, you’ll climb up several flights of stairs to a rooftop where you can look down on centuries-old dying vats. The is overwhelming for most foreigners, and visitors are often given sprigs of mint to help deal with it.

Borj Nord

The old city’s walls and ramparts are lit up at night, and many locals and tourists head to Borj Nord to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. This lookout area was built in the 16th century to allow then-ruler Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour’s men to keep watch over the city and its inhabitants. A military museum that houses a variety of Moroccan weaponry, including a 12-ton canon, is open at Borj Nord during the day, and the short hike to the nearby Merenid Tombs can turn a visit to the ramparts into a more active half-day trip.
