Trivandrum Beaches

Kovalam Beach, located ca. 16 km distance from the city centre, is memorable because of its natural beauty and distinctive red and white striped lighthouse. It is a great place to visit on a hot and sticky summer's day. Visitors often get involved and help local fishermen bring in nets and fishing boats! If you like seafood, head to the neighbouring sea port of Vizhinjam, about 3 km distance from the coconut tree lined Kovalam Beach. The town is home to large churches and lovely Hindu temples, a mosque and numerous restaurants. Sanghumukham Beach is also a popular tourist destination, offering plenty of bars and restaurants along the seafront where visitors can sample some of Kerala's delicious and fragrant cuisine.

Trivandrum Family Attractions

Napier Museum and Zoo, which inspired author Yann Martel to write his famous book "Life of Pi, Tirpparappu waterfalls and Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary are fabulous places to visit if you are travelling with your family. For those with a head for heights there are Neyyar Dam and Varkala Cliffs.

Historic and cultural Trivandrum Attractions

Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple is a major tourist attraction. The legendary treasures stored in its vaults are said to be worth more than $20 billion. Constructed in Dravidian style of architecture that is typical of the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, the temple is widely regarded as being the richest Hindu temple complex in the world, boasting a splendid 16th century Gopuram; an enormous and highly ornate tower at the temple's entrance typical of southern India. The splendour of Padmanabhapuram Palace dates back to 1601 AD. Constructed for the ruler of Venad, Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal, the palace is located ca. 50 km distance from Trivandrum and sits inside an ancient granite fortress spanning an amazing 4 km in length. The sprawling complex was once at the heart of the ancient capital of Travancore, but by the close of the 18th century the capital was moved to Trivandrum. The palace is one of the finest examples of traditional Kerala style architecture. Sitting at the foot of the Veli Hills, the palace and fortress make for a great day trip destination with a rental car. Trivandrum is regarded as one the top ten greenest cities in India and is home to the Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute and the University of Kerala. Take a stroll in the campus grounds or enjoy a walk in one of the city's many parks.
