Capture sweeping city views and its crescent-shaped harbour from atop the Maiden Tower. Then explore the main courtyard, bath house, burial vaults and mosque at Shirvanshah Palace – once home to northern Azerbaijan's ruling dynasty.
Impressively shaped like a rolled-up rug, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum houses the largest collection of Azeri carpets and over 10,000 other pieces that include Bronze Age jewellery, 14th-century metal works, ceramics and other trinkets.
Overlooking the Old City and Baku Bay, the Flame Towers are a trio of skyscrapers shaped like flames. As the sun goes down, the towers put on a spectacular nightly show that alternates between flames and the flag of Azerbaijan.
The central sweep of Baku's seafront park is filled with rare trees, fountains and fairground rides. But the quaint open-air cafés are particularly hard to resist with a selection of Azeri signature dishes and enchanting live music.
